DESCRIPTION:
Norville Barnes (Tim Robbins)
has arrived in New York fresh off the bus from Muncie, Indiana. A graduate
of the 1958 class of the Muncie College of Administration, Norville is
ready to start at the bottom and work his way up to the top of the corporate
world.
Waring Hudsucker (Charles Durning)
on the other hand, is heading in the opposite direction. At the very moment
Norville lands a position in the mail room of the global super-company
Hudsucker Industries. Waring the founder of the company, leaps from the
fourty-fourth floor boardroom window and lands a position on the pavement
below.
The board of directors is in a panic.
Hudsucker's death means his ownership interest in the company will soon
be offered to the public. There is one man, however, who remains surprisingly
calm Sidney J. Mussburger (Paul Newman). Hudsucker's right-hand man, has
a plan. He'll install a complete imbecile as president of the company and
devalue the stock so the board can acquire a controlling interest for themselves.
But where can he find such a guileless patsy who'll accept the job with
no questions asked?
Enter Norville Barnes.

TRIVIA TO IMPRESS YOUR EASILY IMPRESSED
FRIENDS
-
Both the Hula-Hoop and the Frisbee, which were Norville Barnes'
big ideas in this film, were in fact both manufactured by the Wham-O-Company.
-
The Coen Brothers along with long time friend Sam Raimi wrote
this film and the 1984 flop Crimewave over a single summer. However
after the failure of Crimewave it took another 10 years before
the project was green-lit. In the meantime references to the film were
popping up in some of the other Coen Brothers' films. In Crimewave
itself much of the film takes place in Hudsucker Penitentiary. Also in
1989's Raising Arizona, factory workers can be seen wearing uniforms
that read: "Hudsucker Industries".
-
The Coen's told Jennifer Jason Leigh to base her character
on Roland Russell's performance in the film His Girl Friday.
-
John Goodman makes a small cameo during the newsreel scene,
however he is credited as Karl Mundt. Karl Mundt was the alias of John
Goodman's character in the film Barton Fink, an earlier Coen Brothers
film.
