• The story of the monster's origin told in the beginning of the film is based on a true story. A man named Mr. McFarland was ordered by The US Base he was working on in South Korea to rid a surplus of formaldehyde by dumping it into the sewers which drain into the Han River, as of yet though, the pollution has not lead to creating any monsters.
• Director Bong Joon-Ho nicknamed the creature in this film Steve Buscemi.
