The first film was distributed by Sony Pictures, however
before filming began Sony decided not to fund Revolution Studios, the studio
that made the first Hellboy, any longer and decided to sell the
rights to the franchise as they felt the first film didn't make enough
money to warrant sequels. Universal bought the rights immediately and green-lit
the sequel.
-
The man inside the suit of Abe Sapien for both Hellboy
films was Doug Jones, however in the first film the studio wanted a bigger
name for the voice so they recruited David Hyde Pierce to play the voice.
Pierce felt that the role was really created thanks to the work of Doug
Jones, so he did his best vocal impression of Doug Jones and refused to
take credit for the role or promote the movie in anyway so as to keep the
spotlight on Jones. As a result when it was time to do the sequel they
didn't ask Pierce to voice him again, opting instead to let Doug Jones
use his own voice.

After the success of Pan's Labyrinth Guillermo Del
Toro was offered the opportunity to direct Halo, Harry Potter
And The Half Blood Prince, I Am Legend, and One Missed Call,
however he turned all of them down in order to direct the Hellboy
sequel.
-
The voice of Johann was done by Seth MacFarlane, the creator
and main voice actor of the TV series The Family Guy. This marks
his big screen debut. MacFarlane said he based the voice of Johann on Jeremy
Iron's voice in Die Hard: With A Vengeance.

Outside the auction house Hellboy gets interviewed by a female
reporter, the actress playing the reporter is the real-life daughter of
Ron Perlman, Blake Perlman.

Director Guillemro Del Toro has said that he would love to
make a third Hellboy film and turn it into a franchise, however
he has several projects lined up that he wants to complete first, he indicated
in interviews it could be as long as 10 years away if it does indeed happen.
