-
This film is based on the graphic novels of the same name
by Mike Mignola, most of this story is based off of the book The Seeds
Of Destruction, however several other bits from other books were incorporated
as well.
-
Doug Jones is credited as playing Abe Sapien, but don't worry
you are not going crazy, the body may have been Doug Jones, but the voice
was David Hyde Pierce of Frasier fame. Pierce refused to be credited
for his work though insisting that Doug Jones created the character and
he should be the only one to be recognized for it.
-
Guillermo Del Toro had trying to get a Hellboy movie
made for years but could never get a studio to greenlight the project,
especially with Ron Perlman in the lead. After Del Toro had success with
Blade
II he was told that he could have the choice of directing
Blade
Trinity or Hellboy he choice Hellboy. He still had to
work hard for the next few months before the studio would agree to allow
him to cast Ron Perlman in the role. There first choice was Vin Diesel.
-
In preparation for his role Ron Perlman read all of the Hellboy
comics and worked out as much as 7 days a week to help bulk up his body
to match that of Hellboy's.
-
The make-up process was grueling for Ron Perlman and Doug
Jones. It took Perlman 4 hours to get into full makeup before any shooting
could begin. For Doug Jones the process took an average of 6 hours and
another 4 hours to remove it all. As a result Doug Jones would often sleep
in half costume to lessen the amount of time it would take to be ready
to shoot the next day.
