HEFE'S REVIEW OF:
SYRIANA (2005)

OPENING THOUGHTS

I knew this movie was supposed to be all political and stuff, and I also knew that this movie was about oil, so it comes as no surprise to me that celebrity and political boner George Clooney was in this movie. Now for the real question was it good?

ACTING

GEORGE CLOONEY won an Oscar for his role in this movie, and I am convinced it was because they found his beard to be daring. He did ok, better then he did in say, Batman And Robin, but I didn't see anything Oscar worthy about his performance. It wasn't bad mind you, but best of the year? No, hell even Jake Gyllenhaal did a better job and he was in that gay sex movie I love so much.
MATT DAMON was good in this film, I like Matt Damon, I always have, he is one of those people who seems like he is saying really important things all of the time, I would be much more comfortable with Matt Damon being political then George Clooney, Matt Damon seems like a smart guy to me, maybe I am, wrong.
JEFFREY WRIGHT was in this movie, and even though he said about as much as a 3rd grader who peed his pants sitting in the corner, I still liked his performance. It was consistent, and he was very careful not to show any emotion. I like him more when he talks though.
CHRIS COOPER was cast perfectly as an oil tycoon, he was all about the money and made no apologies for it, and he has a great accent. I like Chris Cooper, but I don't know if he will ever have a role better then he did in Adaptation.

DIRECTION AND SCRIPT

STEPHEN GAGHAN wrote and directed this film, I didn't really like the way this was directed, it reminded me of Traffic, but without the color filters, although I hated the color filters so that is a plus. But this is one of those films where it is supposed to be gritty and the camera shakes a lot and shows lots of unnescassry footage like walls and the sky while people are talking. I didn't think it worked for this movie, and the reason it didn't is because the subject matter was so heavy and there were too many characters and stories going on at once that I think the look of the film needed to be steady to give people the best chance at following what is going on. It was all too much, in my opinion the story would have been a lot stronger with a steady camera, a few less characters, and more screen time with the kept characters. Other than that good work, I think anyone who watches this movie will get the message you are trying get at.

THE VERDICT

This movie says one thing, and it says it a lot, oil is evil and anyone who pursues it will get fucked in the ass by someone else who wants it more. So go out and buy a Hybrid car, clip your grass with some scissors, and go force an SUV driver to watch this movie until he realizes what a horrible person he truly is...
