HEFE'S REVIEW OF:
SOUTH PARK:
BIGGER, LONGER AND UNCUT (1999)

OPENING THOUGHTS

I can still remember the excitement I felt when I was on my way to see this movie the first time. At the time I was a huge South Park fan staying up on every Wednesday night making sure I was seeing the brand new episodes first so I could quote them at school the next day. I was so happy, so excited... it's a presence I haven't felt since...

ACTING

TREY PARKER is South Park, he does all of the most important voices including Cartman. He is responsible for much of the writing as well as all of the songs. This movie would be shit with out him. In my mind Trey Parker is a genius. The voices the songs everything that he did in this movie was wonderfully perfect and semi-erotic.
MATT STONE is another driving force behind South Park but a blind person can see he doesn't do nearly as much. You kind of get the feeling that if Trey Parker wasn't there no one would have any idea who Matt Stone is. But thankfully Trey Parker is there, and for whatever reason these two work well off of each other.
ISAAC HAYES plays the sensual, smooth talking, womanizing... school Chef. Chef who usually is responsible for numerous songs in the show didn't have much singing to do in this musical of a movie. That's ok, he was still glorious, and even though he left the show like a big fat pussy because he got offended by the show making fun of Scientology, I still have my memories.

DIRECTION AND SCRIPT

TREY PARKER directed this movie, and unlike in other animated movies where I am unsure exactly what a director is responsible for, here I know exactly what he is responsible for... fucking everything. I swear this man is a genius, I have seen all of his movies, probably almost every episode of South Park and I don't think anyone is as consistently funny and inventive. I have great admiration for him and I can truly say I would love to hang out with this guy.
TREY PARKER, MATT STONE, and PAM BRADY had a stoke of genius with this movie. First off the idea of making this an offensive animated musical was brilliant, and the songs in the movie are perfect. Second, they were able to take something relevant to them and pop culture in general and turn it into the plot of the movie. The idea that in America swearing is just as bad if not worse then seeing someone gutted on the screen. The idea is insane to me, and obviously is to them as well. But rather than bitch about it, they made an unbelievably funny movie that is as smart as it is ridiculous. Just like the show it never ceases to amaze me.

THE VERDICT

Anyone who has ever even chuckled at a South Park episode on TV should watch this movie. It is offensive if you are a donkey raping shit eater, but aside from that most people should be able to see that it is so over the top offensive that it is in fact not offensive at all. This is one of the best comedies of all time and a staple in my own film library.
