HEFE'S REVIEW OF:
SNATCH (2000)

OPENING THOUGHTS

Ok, so I watched this movie from a request, which is no problem because I really like this movie. I like this movie a lot, I think it is great, but after watching it I was left with a dilemma. How much do I like this movie, what grade should I give it. I mean I have probably seen this movie more than 20 times in the few years that it has been out, but after all of that time, after all of those viewings, what kind of grade would I give this film?

ACTING

JASON STATHAM is great in this movie, he is a great bad ass, and it helps that he has that sweet British accent. It is one of those rare accents that actually make you sound cooler, most British accents make people sound like twats, and Americans have to keep having to ask what the fuck it is that they are saying. It's like this one time I was waiting in line at Disneyland to have my picture taken with Snow White, and this British family comes up behind me and they say: "Oi, you inda cue?" and I said. "What?", and they said it again, "You inda cue?" to which I again responded with a more irritated "WHAT?" and they pointed to the line and said "The que." Finally I figured out what they're garbled mouths were spitting out and I said, "Oh you mean the line, yeah I'm in the LINE." Anyway, that is a little story for you.
BRAD PITT  was awesome in this movie, and I think if I hadn't seen him in this movie I may have gone my whole life thinking Brad Pitt was a worthless douche bag that I wanted no part of. Up to this point I only knew him from movies like Seven Years In Tibet and Legends Of The Fall, this was the first time I saw him in a role and thought he was kick ass and I needed to see more. Then when I saw Fight Club it became official, The Pitt was awesome. He really is awesome in this role, his speech patterns, his mannerisms, just really fucking good, watch this movie if for no other reason than to see him.
DENNIS FARINA was my American anchor, he was the guy that I could always count on to understand his lines. A lot of the people in this movie had such thick accents that I had trouble understanding everything the first few times I watched. Now, being a seasoned Snatch watcher, hehe, yeah seasoned Snatch watcher, I have come to understand most everything that is being said. But before that, I knew I could count on Farina. He did a great job in this movie, and I have to agree with G Baby that he is really good at swearing.
THE SUPPORTING CAST in this movie was also amazing, everyone from the smallest role to the biggest was perfectly cast and well developed. Some honorable mentions include Vinnie Jones, and the huge black getaway driver Vincent. But again everyone was great, just great.

DIRECTION AND SCRIPT

GUY RITCHIE made me think he was one of the best and coolest directors ever after I saw this movie. I was twice as amazed when I found out that he wrote the whole thing too. Then I thought I can hardly wait to see his next movie, then I found it was Swept Away and it felt like I got kicked in the balls. But that is another story, for now lets focus on this movie. The direction is extreme, it is in your face and it is the type of action movie that people have been trying to unsuccessfully copy ever since. There are some great shots in this movie where I actually stopped and looked at the screen and thought to myself, Jesus that is an awesome shot! The other thing that I have to talk about here is the characters, all of them were unique and well developed. They all had sweet nicknames, and best of all there was nobody that was wasted. In a lot of movies there seems to be characters that are meaningless, not in this movie though. Fuck no, not in this movie.

THE VERDICT

This is one of the best action movies I have ever seen, a lot of people question whether this would be considered an action movie, but to me it is. There is fighting, swearing, and the feel of the movie is just so fast paced and intense, that even jerking off doesn't compare. I highly recommend everyone watches this movie at least once, it is the best Guy Ritchie movie and a great example of modern filmmaking. You may want to turn on the subtitles the first time you watch this movie as the accents are so fucking stupid you may have a hard time at first. But trust me, this is one movie I don't think you could regret, even if you don't love Snatch as much as I do. Did you see what I just said, if you don't love Snatch as much as I do. Snatch.
