HEFE'S REVIEW OF:
OCEAN'S THIRTEEN

OPENING THOUGHTS

Well they made another one, I didn't ask them to, but they did it anyway. I have never found these movies to be that great, but the thing that amazes me more than a mediocre movie having a second sequel, is the fact that they were able to get all of these people back together long enough to film this movie. With all of their schedules it must have been tough as shit, and I bet the guy who had to coordinate all of their schedules had to start taking drugs to ease some of the tension. Before long the drugs started taking control of his life and he began not showing up to work without even calling in. Eventually he had to be fired, and when he told his wife about it she confronted him and told him that he had a drug problem. Of course he denied it, but she just kept pushing it and finally the words being thrown back and forth turned to shoves. The last time he shoved his wife was also the last time he saw her alive, that final shove caused her to lose her balance and fall down the stairs. He quickly ran down the stairs only to discover her lifeless body. After a few genuine tears he ran upstairs and grabbed the gun he kept hidden in his closet. After kissing his dead wife on the lips and apologizing to the God he was both cursing and asking for forgiveness from he closed his eyes. As he felt the cold steel against his temple a shiver of goose-bumps and relief washed over him. He might have smiled but instead he pulled the trigger and in an instant it was all over... so anyway, I hope it was worth making another sequel.

ACTING

GEORGE CLOONEY did not seem to be trying at all in this movie, in fact it felt as though he was just kind of messing around the whole time. In fact I kind of got that impression a lot during this movie, but since Clooney is supposed to be the main star in this movie he had a responsibility to bring his A-game. Because that's what Brina Boitano'd do.
MATT DAMON was the only one of the three "main" characters who seemed to be really trying to have a consistent character. I felt like I was watching the progression of a character that I knew from the previous films, and that was a little glint of goodness in a world of shit.
AL PACINO was only ok in this movie as well, normally I am a big fan of Pacino, but he didn't do it for me this time. He seemed kind of out of place and the way he delivered his lines it felt like he was doing an Al Pacino impression rather than just being himself. I know that sounds fucked up but it's true, it's like he has been watching Bill Hader on SNL do the impression of him and he liked the reactions that it got so he decided he would try it out.

DIRECTION AND SCRIPT

STEVEN SODERBERGH has never been my favorite director, in fact there have been times where his movies have made me angry. But he should just flat out be ashamed of himself this time around. This movie felt like it was one long inside joke that you weren't a part of. It seemed like everyone on set was having a really good time, but it was like everyone was hamming it up and smiling too much, and that is after who knows how many takes. I am sure it would have been a blast to be on set joking around with your friends on a multi-million dollar set, but what about the people who watch the movie? Don't they deserve to see all of the actors at least attempting to put in a good performance? Isn't that why they make more money off of one movie than I will see in my entire life? Come on you ass-fuck!
BRIAN KOPPELMAN and DAVID LEVIEN wrote this second sequel, and in all honesty the story was not that bad. It would have been a nice heist movie on it's own, it was clever in places and the pacing seemed to be ok as well. But I will never be able to know for sure because the people who executed the script did such a bad job of bringing it to life that only a fraction of the intended vision came through.

THE VERDICT

This is not the worst movie ever made, but I was extremely disappointed. Considering the amount of talent that was in this movie you would think there would be excellent performances, but sadly for the most part this was not the case. This movie seemed to be made more for the actors in the film rather than the audience. So just think about that when you are mourning the fictional schedule-guy from the first paragraph.
