HEFE'S REVIEW OF:
LEATHERHEADS (2008)

OPENING THOUGHTS

I am not going to lie, from the get-go I thought this movie looked like it had an excellent chance of sucking. But I decided to give this movie a chance, in part because the last Geroge Clooney directed film that I saw, Good Night, And Good Luck, was actually really good. Also the other reason is that I like John Krasinski on The Office and I wanted to see if he would transfer well to the big screen.

ACTING

GEORGE CLOONEY is one smug son-of-a-bitch, and has got to be in the running for Hollywood's biggest douche bag. He wrote this movie for himself, and the way he wrote himself to be this perfectly charming asshole, and the way he played it really pissed me off. It seemed like he thought he could make this movie with the lead character having nothing to offer but a sideways smile and half-shaven face.I felt like vomiting whenever he was on screen. The worst part is, that was not even the worst performance that this movie had to offer.
RENEE ZELLWEGER on the other hand, was the worst thing this movie had to offer. She was just terrible in everyway. I have seen this character a thousand times, and everytime I see it, I am instantly filled with a rage that can only be quenched by violence. The sassy quick talking early 20th Century female reporter is easily one of the worst inventions ever to be smeared across the screen. I would also like to point out that Renee Zellweger has to be one of the worst actress ever to assume this position (pun intended). As if that wasn't bad enough, this marks the second time she has played this character, the first being in Down With Love, although she was much less irritating in that movie.
JOHN KRASINSKI was not bad in this movie, but he was not great either. Since he was one of the reasons I watched this movie, I had hoped to at least get a good performance out of him. Sadly, all I got was a toned down version of his character from The Office. I still think he has the talent to become a bigger star, but this s definitely not the vehicle that is going to get him there.

DIRECTION AND SCRIPT

GEORGE CLOONEY is the person who is most responsible for this movie being the worst film I have seen since the 2 Girls, 1 Cup video I saw on the internet. The pacing was bad, the characters were more like caricatures, and the dialogue was terrible. Sure he is not credited with writing the script, that originally was done by two sports writers, which is itself a bad idea, but Clooney pretty much scrapped the original script and wrote his own. So this is all his fault. The story went nowhere and it seemed to take eons to get there. This actually reminds me of another George Clooney project called Solaris. It was like Clooney abandoned his solid directing start that he had with Confessions Of A Dangerous Mind and Good Night, And Good Luck, in favor of the long drawn out stylings of Soderbergh's Solaris. Big mistake in my opinion. Clooney can be a good director as long as he is not directing himself, and as long as he does not have free-reign to change the script.

THE VERDICT

This is easily one of the worst movies I have seen all year, and probably one of the worst I have ever sat through, and I have seen Surf Nazi's Must Die. All I can say is at least that movie knew it was bad, this one seemed to think it was going to be king shit of fuck mountain without anyone even having to try. Well I have got some startling news for you... it wasn't.
