HEFE'S REVIEW OF:
THE BOURNE ULTIMATUM

OPENING THOUGHTS

The first Bourne movie was really good, it was like they made a modern version of James Bond who was quiet, could kick ass, and was dressed up like Matt Damon so no one would suspect a thing. The sequel was really good as well, although I didn't care for the shaky camera. So now we are on the third installment, let us pray the magic has continued...

ACTING

MATT DAMON can kick some serious balls if he needs to, and in some ways even though I have seen him do this in the first two movies it still surprises me a bit. I always think of that line in The 40-Year-Old Virgin when the guys are watching a fight scene in The Bourne Identity and they are surprised at how well he does and Paul Rudd says that he always "thought of Matt Damon as kind of a 'Mary'." That is the perfect way to describe my feelings about Damon is this role. I am pleasantly surprised every time.
JULIA STILES is really not a good actress, and she fucked her way into a small role in the first film and she got a bigger role in this one. She does not convey good emotion, this may in part be because she has dead eyes. I can't even say I was disappointed that she was not naked in this movie either. I truly did not want to see it... any of it.
ALBERT FINNEY has a huge neck, and it is now gotten so big that he can hardly even speak. Every time he talks you can hear is voice gurgling in neck fat, and his round face seems to struggle to stay afloat and not sink to the endless abyss that is his ever-growing neck. That being said I like Albert Finney, he just needs to do some throat exercises so that he doesn't become all neck. It's only because I care Albert Finney, it's only because I care.

DIRECTION AND SCRIPT

PAUL GREENGRASS once again went with the really shaky camera and extreme close-ups. I really can't say enough how much I do not like this style. Maybe he has Parkinson's disease so he thinks he is shooting a really tight movie, which is that is the case please except my apologies. But for people without the shakes it is agonizing. It makes me dizzy when I see it in theaters and when I see it at home it makes me angry. Especially during fight scenes because I can tell they worked really hard on the choreography of the fights, and instead of getting to see it well, all you can see is a random foot or rouge fist. I dunno it just seems like such a waste after working so hard to not really be able to see it.
TONY GILROY, SCOTT Z. BURNS and GEORGE NOLFI wrote this third installment in the series and I thought they did a good job. There was good continuity with the returning characters, and I enjoyed all of the new blokes as well. But one thing I will never understand is how it takes three damn people to write a script that was based off a book. I mean the story is already written. Is there like one guy who writes it, another who is in charge of capital letters, and another who does punctuation and makes sandwiches? It is just silly.

THE VERDICT

This is a good movie, I don't think it is as good as the first film, but it is at least on par with the second one. I think this would have gotten a better score if they could have kept the original director Doug Liman. All Paul Greengrass did was take a good series down a notch, and that makes me sad. Not full on weeping sad mind you, more like a single tear on a Native American's face sad.
