HEFE'S REVIEW OF:
ANCHORMAN:THE LEGEND OF RON BURGUNDY (2004)

OPENING THOUGHTS

I did enjoy this movie, in fact I thought there were many scenes in this movie that were down right hilarious, but this movie really did not live up to my expectations, especially Will Ferrell. I am probably one of the biggest Will Ferrell fans on the global world map stage, you know I like him a lot, so what was it that made me feel let down?

ACTING

WILL FERRELL did one thing very well in this movie, and that is staying true his character, somehow no matter how ridiculous the situation, I still bought inside the Ron Bugundy character. But I found myself disappointed in the character that Ferrell chose to play. I thought it was very limiting, and many of things that I normally enjoy about Will Ferrell like his voice inflexion were kept in his very monotone voice. It started to get a little bit old and I found myself wanting to watch his old SNL performances or Old School instead of really getting into the movie. Nevertheless I still remain loyal to Will Ferrell and can hardly wait to see the fifty different movies that he is currently working on. Besides, it's not like there was nothing in this movie to enjoy, Will Ferrell had many damn good scenes as well, plenty to keep any fan appeased until his next movie comes out.
CHRISTINA APPLEGATE has never really done anything for me. I have always found her performances to be pretty average and to be honest I thought she was on her way out a few years ago. But then, unexpectedly she was in A View From The Top (which is not a James Bond movie despite it's title), and The Sweetest Thing both movies having big co-stars, and has been moving up in ranks ever since. Luckily she doesn't really bother me like say Julia Roberts, but I am just surprised at her success, hey remember when she was the slutty daughter in Married With Children? Oh man, that was great!
PAUL RUDD just keeps on proving me right, I have said before, and damn it I will say it again, i think he is hilarious and I am thrilled to see him in more movies now! I thought he did a great job as the smooth one of the group, and he fit into the whole 70's lifestyle very well, maybe to well. Anyway good job Rudd!
STEVE CARELL is the person who really stole the show in this movie. I laughed at pretty much everything he did in this movie. Fans who have followed him from The Daily Show will not be disappointed in this movie. I would say that he has more quotables in this movie than any other character, and trust me this entire movie was made for quoting!
DAVID KOECHNER was the weakest part of the cast by far. I suppose a lot of it had to with the fact that his character was the most one dimensional. I mean he was a cowboy sports reporter who yelled "Whammy" all the damn time. While he was good for a light sprinkling of chuckles throughout this movie, for the most apart I just wanted him to be quiet.

DIRECTION AND SCRIPT

WILL FERRELL AND DAVID MCKAY have done something interesting with this movie. I think this movie is very unique in that you could really see that this movie was made by a bunch of guys who had pretty much free reign to do whatever the hell they wanted. In Hollywood that is pretty rare, it seemed as though they had complete creative control, so I must give props to them for being able to accomplish that feat! I don't know how they did it! The script itself was more concerned with one-liners than an actual story, which normally doesn't bother me, but I really felt like this movie needed work on the pacing, it felt like it dragged on in a lot of parts.

THE VERDICT

Fans of Will Ferrell should definitely see this movie, however if you are on of those unfortunate people who just don't get Will Ferrell than you should really skip this movie. It has been my experience that you either really love this movie or you don't get the humor and you think it is stupid. So you just need to find out which category you fit in. I personally love Will Ferrell so I enjoyed this movie, that being said, I don't think I enjoyed this movie quite as much as some of my friends, and I think this movie could have been a little bit better.
