HEFE'S REVIEW OF:
ALMOST FAMOUS

OPENING THOUGHTS

First off, let me just say any movie about 70's music that doesn't revolve around disco has a good shot at being good. I mean even if all you have to work with is the hair and soundtrack, you know there has got to be something to love. I mean after all, music did reach it's peak in 1978 but alas, I am writing a movie review not a music commentary, so let me get back on track. This movie rocked my socks off, literally. Strong actors, great story, and awesome directing equals one hell of a movie experience.

ACTING

BILLY CRUDUP the star of this movie, I thought was the weakest part about the film. It felt like he was uncomfortable on screen, and I know part of that is the character. But he came across to me as slightly retarded rather than awkward.
KATE HUDSON aside from being hot, put in a fantastic performance, and let me just say I thought it was freaky how much she reminded me of her mother, Goldie Hawn. Also she is naked in this movie, as in no clothes.
FRANCES McDORMAND played an awesome psycho mom. She actually kind of reminded me of my own mother trying to restrict what kinds of music I could listen to, and being just opressivly over-protective. Take it from somebody who knows, she did a really good job.
THE SUPPORTING CAST in this movie was really great as well. Philip Seymour Hoffman who aside from his obnoxious name did great, newcomer Patrick Fugit who looked right at home on the screen, and of course Jason Lee who might very well have been put on this Earth to play this role, really fantastic.

DIRECTION AND SCRIPT

CAMERON CROWE did an excellent job of really capturing the 70's. I think he needs to stick to movies like this, and take a vow never to make another Tom Cruise pluckin' on your heart strings shit-fest. I thought it was a good decision to use a fictional band (Stillwater), that way you avoided the baggage of a "name," and let me just say the music from Stillwater was awesome, along with the rest of the soundtrack, it added so much to the movie.

THE VERDICT

I would highly recommend this movie to anyone, especially if they like classic rock, although it's great even if you know nothing about it. This movie is actually fun to watch, it's filled with laughs and drama, and is a nice alternative to dick and fart jokes, even though dick and fart jokes rule! Trust me on this one, watch this movie and feel the love, and the one your watching it with.
