HEFE'S REVIEW OF:
ALI

OPENING THOUGHTS

Man oh man, sometimes I wonder if critics have their heads shoved up their asses when a movie is playing. This might be the worst critically acclaimed  movie I have ever seen. It really pisses me of that they had this great story about one of the coolest athletes of all time and then wipe their ass on a piece of paper and call it a script.

ACTING

WILL SMITH did a tremendous job in this film, its just a shame that the poor direction of the film ruined my experience and didn't allow me to enjoy the performance as much as I would have liked. Will Smith was nominated for Best Actor for his performance, which I think is well deserved, but what I don't agree with is why everyone is making such a big deal about him being the first rapper actor to receive this nomination. All of the sudden everyone is talking about rappers being these spectacular actors and they are not. Will Smith is an exception. It is the same way with singers every once in awhile you get someone like Madonna who stands out as a little better then the rest (for the record I am not a Madonna fan.), I do not like that rappers are appearing in so many movies nowadays, and I think that for the majority of rappers and singers, that they should stick to what they know.

DIRECTION AND SCRIPT

STEPHEN J. RIVELE, CHRISTOPHER WILKINSON, ERIC ROTH, and MICHAEL MANN wrote the script for this movie, and it was so confused and jumpy that it was nearly impossible to follow. This I blame on the director Michael Mann who was trying so hard to make another popular "artsy" movie after his success with winning Best Director for The Insider, that he completely sacrificed the story.
MICHAEL MANN made this movie into a train wreck, his choice of tints on the film is a perfect example of this lunacy. He used many different colors on the screen which did nothing more then irritate me and distract me. I hated it in Traffic and now I loathe it in Ali. At least in Traffic there was a point, blue equals America, and yellow equals Mexico, and even then I found the tints to be distracting. The other problem I have with the directing was all of the jumping around that this film did. Back and forth, thirty seconds here, two minutes here, with no explanation that time and had changed, and never allowing the audience enough time to get to know any of the characters.

THE VERDICT

I would not recommend anyone sitting though this movie, it is really really horrible. The only reason that this movie didn't get the worst rating that I can give out is because of Will Smith's performance and because this is a movie that by all means should have been good. I would like to thank Michael Mann for this steaming pile of monkey shit that he calls a film. My advice, concentrate more on story and less on artsy things that you think will get you another nomination for Best Director.
