HEFE'S REVIEW OF:
ACE VENTURA: PET DETECTIVE

OPENING THOUGHTS

This movie is a classic example of comedy perfection. I can remember clearly the first time that I saw this movie, and I cannot remember laughing so hard. This is one of those rare comedies that is required viewing. If you say that you like comedies than there is no question that you have seen this. This movie's humor is immortal ranking up with the likes of Tommy Boy, Billy Madison, Spaceballs, and Austin Powers: International Man of Mystery. If you have not seen this movie I suggest you stop reading this review and go rent it now!

ACTING

JIM CARREY played his role well, very well. As I have come to expect from him, he played every character in this movie with all of his heart and was able to make the most unbelievable person believable. I mean we are talking about a guy with hair similar to Guile from Street Fighter 2 who goes around solving animal mysteries, I don't know very many actors out there who I could see playing a role like that and not immediately write it off as garbage.
COURTENEY COX did an average job in this movie, it's not like she did a bad job she just wasn't very funny. In a way it's not really her fault though, she played off of Jim Carrey very well, in a way she kind of took one for the team by playing the straight man and making Jim Carrey seem that much funnier. I can respect that, it's like having a friend sleep with the ugly chick so you can score with her hot friend, that is just incredibly nice. You know, I've heard...
TONE LoC did a surprisingly good job in this movie. I think he was just half a step ahead of the flood of rappers turned actors to make a lasting career out of it. I will say this for him though, I think he did better than most of the rappers in movies, he wasn't great, but at least he could do more than one expression, and without gold or platinum teeth. Way to be man!
DAN MARINO, poor defenseless Dan Marino, he tried so hard to act well. But, unfortunately, Dan Marino does not act well, but unlike what you would expect from me I am not going to tell him to stay where he belongs, because whenever someone has the courage to play themselves in anything, that means that they are giving you permission to laugh at them. When someone has courage like that I respect them for it, he may not have done the best job, but at least he tried. Besides lets be honest in most comedies, acting takes a second seat to humor, so what I look for in a comedy is not how well someone acted, but if the movie made me laugh. This movie did it's job, I laughed my ass off a hundred time over, and must have watched this movie a million times!

DIRECTION AND SCRIPT

JACK BERNSTEIN, TOM SHADYAC, and JIM CARREY have made a great script together. I am pretty sure that a lot of Jim Carrey's things were written by Jim Carrey himself, it just seems too much like his style of humor. But I have no doubt the story, flow, and characters all belong to Jack Bernstein and Tom Shadyac. I think the three combined forces to make a story that was interesting to watch as well laugh out loud, piss my pants get me some toilet paper because now I have to wipe funny!

THE VERDICT

I would definitely recommend this movie to anyone who can appreciate somewhat mindless humor that is solely there for entertainment value. In my opinion those are usually the comedies that stick out most in my mind, and the ones that I keep returning to watch time and time again. Watch this movie, watch it, go on get the hell out there and watch it! Why are you still reading go!
