From Harmony Korine, screenwriter
of the critically acclaimed KIDS comes a haunting portrait of life
in small-town America. Through a collection of dreamlike and devastating
images, Korine offers a glimpse of Xenia, OHio, a world existing in the
aftermath of a tornado. SUrvivors of one natural disaster, the town's inhabitants
live each day in a numbing atmosphere of physical and emotional destruction.
With an ensemble cast including Max Perlich (Beautiful Girls, Drugstore
Cowboy) and Academy Award Nominated Chloe Sevigny (Boys Don't Cry),
Harmony Korine has created an American original. Gummo cannot be

Out of all of the people who appear in this film, only five
are professional actors. The rest are old friends from writer/director
Harmony Korine's Nashville childhood, and people found in local bowling
alleys and fast food restaurants.

This film was based on a series of 70 sketches that Korine
had written about Xenia, OH, a place he had never visited. However the
original script had the town experiencing life after an earthquake.

Actor Chloe Sevigny also doubled as the costume designer,
buying most of the costumes at local thrift stores.

Harmony Korine also had a small role in this movie as the
boy on the couch. The scene in which he plays opposite the midget he was
actually drunk during filming.

This film was shot in 20 days with a budget $1.3 million
dollars.

While shooting around town the cast and crew were frequently
chased away by locals with shotguns who were convinced they were shooting
child pornography.
