WHAT THE STUDIO WANTS YOU TO KNOW
DESCRIPTION:
Bill Murray is at his wry,
wisecracking vest in the riotous romantic comedy about a weatherman caught
in a personal time warp on the worst day of his life.
Teamed with a relentlessly cheerful
producer (Andie MacDowell) and a smart-aleck cameraman (Chris Elliott),
TV weatherman Phil Connors (Bill Murray) is sent to Punxsutawney, Pennsylvania,
to cover the annual Groundhog Day festivities. After a surprise blizzard
traps him in small-town hell, things get even worse; Phil wakes up the
next morning to find it's Groundhog Day all over again... and again...
and again.

TRIVIA TO IMPRESS YOUR EASILY IMPRESSED
FRIENDS
-
Harold Ramis had originally wanted to cast Tom Hanks in the
lead, but he changed his mind before approaching him because he felt that
Hanks was too "nice" to play the role.
-
Some scenes were cut from the original script, including
a scene which explains that Phil Connors' bad day is caused by an ex-girlfriend
named Stephanie who curses him. Another scene in which Connors tries to
kill the groundhog in it's den was cut because it was feared it would remind
people too much of Bill Murray's scenes in Caddyshack.
-
Bill Murray was bitten twice during filming by the groundhog.
-
Although it is never said exactly how many times the character
relives Feburary 2nd, in the DVD commentary Harold Ramis estimated that
he relived the same day for about ten years straight.
-
Despite working together on numerous projects, Harold Ramis
said that he and Murray butted heads throughout filming. Murray wanted
this film to be more philosophical, while Ramis wanted to focus on doing
a straight comedy. Murray apparently became so frustrated with Ramis that
he hasn't spoken to him since.
