WHAT THE STUDIO WANTS YOU TO KNOW
DESCRIPTION:
They're high school graduates
- and the world's got hell to pay! Hot new talents Thora Birch (American
Beauty) and Scarlett Johansson (The Horse Whisperer) "sneak
into your heart and stay there" (Rolling Stone) in this "uproariously
funny" (Premiere) comedy from the acclaimed director of Crumb.
With Brad Renfro (Deuces Wild), Ileana Douglas (Stir of Echoes)
and Steve Buscemi (Fargo) in "the best role of his career" (Movieline),
this "whip-smart comedy" is "a surprise gem" (People)!
While their classmates head for college,
Enid (Birch) and Rebecca (Johansson) focus their energies on tormenting
those around them! From a goofy convenience store clerk (Renfro) to an
eccentric art teacher (Douglas), these two saboteurs wreak havoc on all
who cross their paths. But when they zero in on an oddball loner (Buscemi)
looking for Miss Right, their seemingly innocent meddling threatens to
shatter one of their hearts... not to mention their lifelong friendship.

-
This movie is based of the underground graphic novel of the
same name written by Daniel Clowes, who also served as a screenwriter for
this film along with director Terry Zwigoff.
-
The Coon Chicken Inn shown in the film was a real chain of
restaurants based out of Salt Lake City, UT in the 1920's. However according
to this film, the company changed it's name to Cook Chicken and is still
in business. This part is actually untrue, the company never changed it's
name and it when out of business in the 1950's
-
This film received an Academy Award nomination for Best Adapted
Screenplay, this was the first time that a film based off a comic or graphic
novel has ever been nominated in a writing category.
-
The role of Seymour was partially based off of director Terry
Zwigoff, who like the character has an obsession with collection 1920's
jazz records. Steve Buscemi said he was so uncomfortable playing the role
of Seymour that as soon as shooting finished for the day he would change
all of his clothes so that he could feel like a different person.
