WHAT THE STUDIO WANTS YOU TO KNOW
DESCRIPTION:
Drug smuggling. Racketeering.
Loan sharking. Welcome to Hollywood! Golden Globe winner John Tavolta leads
an all-star cast in "the most flat-out enjoyable movie of the year" (NY
Newsday) - a hysterical comedy that insists it doesn't take much to
make it in the movies... just a background with the mob.
Loneshark Chili Palmer (Travolta)
has done his time as a gangster. So when "buisness" takes him to L.A. to
collect a debt from a down-and-out filmmaker (Gene Hackman), Chili jumps
headfirst into the Hollywood scene: he schmoozes a film star (Danny DeVito),
romances a "B" movie queen (Rene Russo) and even gets reservations at the
hottest restaurants in town. In fact, all would be smooth for this cool
new producer, if it weren't for the drug smugglers and an angry mobster
who won't leave him alone. But hey, this is Hollywood and no one said it
would be easy!

-
Barry Sonnenfeld, the director of this movie, had a bit part
as a doorman.
-
Sonnenfeld was not the studio's first choice to direct this
movie, in fact it was Quentin Tarantino. Although he did not end up directing
the movie he would later make the movie Jackie Brown which was also
based on an Elmore Leonard book, the author that wrote Get Shorty.
-
Director Sonnenfeld had asked Bruce Willis, Al Pacino, Robert
De Niro, Michael Keaton, and Dustin Hoffman to play the lead role of Chili
Palmer, but they all turned down the role. The role was then offered to
Danny DeVito who was not able to commit enough time to play the lead role,
so instead he decided to play the role of Martin Weir who has much less
screen time. The last person offered the role was John Travolta, he also
turned down the role. He was finally convinced to direct the film by Quentin
Tarantino.
-
According to Elmore Leonard, the author of the book on which
the film was based, the character of Martin Weir was based on an encounter
he had in Hollywood with Dustin Hoffman.
