When I bought my ticket I said, "One
ticket for Mel Gibson's Apocalypto please." That's right, I said
it. He made Braveheart, man. And no amount of drunken remarks will
ever take that away from him. I really liked Braveheart because
Gibson was able to weave personal stories into a larger story of historical
significance and make an exciting movie. I think my biggest problem with
Apocalypto was that it failed to do that. The story was too specific.
It was about a small group of people and it really didn't have much to
do with the bigger picture. That, and it was exhausting. It felt like it
was shot in real time. There was chasing and running and more running and
then more chasing. It was shot well and it definitely kept its momentum
going. If Gibson's intent was to beat the shit out of his audience then
I suppose he succeeded. It was very violent to a disgusting degree, but
I really didn't have a problem with that. It was realistic, but it's probably
going to be too much for a lot of people. If you're going to go see this
movie, prepare yourself for a journey. Maybe bring a sandwich. That's what
my brother did and he enjoyed it more than The Kid and I. Etc... Etc...
Wait, no that's something else.
