G BABY'S REVIEW OF:
THE 40-YEAR-OLD VIRGIN (2005)

OPENING THOUGHTS

I've seen this movie so many times now. I love it so much because it's so funny. It tickles my fancy like not many films can. It's exactly what I think a romantic comedy should be. So I know I'm going to give t a good grade, but the big question is: Is it good enough for the much coveted A rating? I did give it an A in my Now Playing review, but now that it's been a while and I've seen it several times, did some of the funniness wear off? Or is it still as funny as the first time I saw it? Come with me on my journey and maybe we can answer these questions together.

ACTING

STEVE CARELL is a genius. He deserves to included with the likes of Will Ferrell, Jack Black, and Owen Wilson. This movie was the perfect vehicle to make that transition from character actor to movie star. I can't remember if I first saw him in Bruce Almighty or on The Daily Show, but I know I enjoyed him immensely in both. Then I saw him in Anchorman and I said, "Yes yes! More more! Steve Carell where have you been all my life?" Then I had to change my underpants. Hey did you know he was the voice of Gary in The Ambiguously Gay Duo?
PAUL RUDD should come over and hang out with me and my friends some time. I think we'd all have a great time. If the only movie you've ever seen is The Object Of My Affection, then you might think he's kind of a Mary. But trust me; he's more than made up for that shit with movies like Wet Hot American Summer, Anchorman, and now The 40-Year-Old Virgin. And on top of that, he's the only cool celebrity to be born on my birthday.
CATHERINE KEENER is utterly charming in this movie. She's an older woman, but she's a handsome older woman. I'd like to put her and Blythe Danner in a room together with some alcohol and just see what happens. Maybe nothing, but you know... maybe something. Anyway I think she, like Steve Carell, was perfect for this movie. Honestly I thought she deserved an Oscar nomination for this more than Capote.

DIRECTION AND SCRIPT

JUDD APATOW made his theatrical directorial debut with this movie and he has a lot of potential. He was able to direct a really funny movie. Even though I think this movie was funny mostly because of the writing and content, I do give him a lot of credit for letting the actors improvise and make up their own stuff, and in the end he made it all come together.
JUDD APATOW and STEVE CARELL co-wrote this movie and there is just so much funny stuff. I don't know how much of it was in the script and how much was made up by the actors on set, but it was always hilarious. And on top of being hysterical, the characters are well written and it even has a sweet side. In the end, I really liked the message. Yes, it had a message.

THE VERDICT

The 40-Year-Old Virgin is one of the funniest movies I've ever seen. If it doesn't deserve an A, I don't know what comedy does. If you liked Anchorman, or Old School, or Office Space, or American Pie, or any of those kinds of movies, then I promise you will absolutely love The 40-Year-Old Virgin.

WHAT HE SAID THEN
G BABY'S QUICKIE REVIEW FROM BACK WHEN THIS MOVIE WAS STILL IN THEATERS

If you're any kind of a man you must see this movie. It's funnier than shit. I think it was over 2 hours long but it kept me laughing the entire time. I'm glad it was long because if it was shorter I probably would have wanted more. As it is, the movie filled me up like Thanksgiving dinner. That feeling when you know you've had too much, but you love it just the same. I really liked the characters. I identified with Paul Rudd's character and of course I completely identified with the 40-year-old virgin character. I liked how they didn't make him a complete goody-two-shoes. He seemed like a real person and I believed not only that he could exist, but he's probably me in 18 years. Except I don't know magic... yet. This is a fresh movie packed with hilarious scenes and a well told story. Girls might not like it as much as guys, but I think it's something everyone would find funny.
