G BABY'S REVIEW OF:
12 MONKEYS (1995)

OPENING THOUGHTS

I first saw this movie when it came out on Pay Per View a long time ago. I was only a boy then. I don't think I fully understood it at the time. It has such a complicated plot and I was only a child with a fat head and a shitty bottom. I still thought it was really cool though. There's something about it that I just loved. So now that I'm an educated man and a seasoned film critic I thought I'd go back and reexamine the film. Oh, who am I kidding? I'm not a seasoned anything. I talk about boobs and pooping in pretty much every review. Well, hopefully I'm a bit smarter now.

ACTING

BRUCE WILLIS is awesome. He's a big movie star but he'll sacrifice a big paycheck to work on a good project. He's smart to do that because it's kept his career alive all these years. Some might think of him as only an action star, but really he's been in some great roles. The man makes good choices. This is one of them. He really broke away from his typical roles at this point in his career to play a vulnerable and less than perfect hero. I'd say he was perfect for the part.
MADELEINE STOWE seems like she's British, or Canadian, I don't know, something weird. Anyway, she did good. Her character must have been tough to play because it required her to make us believe she could fall in love with a mental patient. Somehow she pulled it off. She made a very believable transition from being terrified of him to letting him inside her.
BRAD PITT also did a great job in this movie. So good in fact that I believe he received an Oscar nomination for best supporting actor. He did a tremendous job of spitting out his fast paced insane dialouge. He was so neurotic and he had crazy eyes! When I first saw this I thought, "Wait a minute! That guy's just a pretty boy! What is he doing acting like that?" Now I know better. Brat Pitt is a good actor and also somebody who can pick good movies... except Troy.

DIRECTION AND SCRIPT

TERRY GILLIAM did a great job directing this movie. The overall feel of the movie is very unique. I can't believe Patsy from Monty Python And The Holy Grail is such a good director. He is the only American born member of Monty Python, so I guess he was the one that kept all those goofy Englishmen in check. I've never seen Fear And Loathing In Las Vegas but he also directed that film, and I understand it's very good aswell. The man's got talent. I'm looking forward to seeing what he does with the new Brothers Grimm movie.
DAVID PEOPLES and JANET PEOPLES wrote a wonderful script based on the 1962 French film La Jetee. La Jetee is a short film that is made up almost entirely of still shots. What I'm wondering is: how the hell did anybody find this film to remake? But I'm glad they did. La Jetee had a cool idea and the screenwriters added a ton of cool ideas and changed some things and made it awesome. Also for some reason I really enjoy the name Peoples and also the name Mario Van Peebles. So good job on the script, and good job on the names.

THE VERDICT

I loved this movie when I first saw it and I still love it now that I'm all grow'd up. It's just so good. It's not for everyone though. Your mom probably won't like it. But if you're like me you'll find it to be a wonderfully dark and unique gem. It's probably my favorite sci-fi-action-thriller-mystery of all time.
