As waves of immigrants swell the population of New York, lawlessness and corruption thrive in lower Manhattan's Five Points section. After years of incarceration, young Irish immigrant Amsterdam Vallon (DiCaprio) returns seeking revenge against the rival gang leader (Day-Lewis) who killed his father. But Amsterdam's personal vendetta becomes part of the gang warfare that erupts as he and his fellow Irishmen fight to carve a place for themselves in their newly adopted homeland!

TRIVIA TO IMPRESS YOUR EASILY IMPRESSED FRIENDS

• The character Bill "The Butcher" Cutter is largely based on the real life person Bill Poole who was also known as The Butcher. He held a similar stature in The Five Points, and ran with an anti-Irish gang known as The Bowery Boys.
• Martin Scorsese had originally wanted to make this film in 1980 with Robert DeNiro playing the role of Amsterdam, however he could not find a studio to back  historical film after the box office failure of Heaven's Gate.
• Originally Martin Scorsese had cast Sarah Polley in the role of Jenny, however the studio stepped in and requested a more "bankable" star be put in the role. Cameron Diaz, eventually became that star.
• Both Leonardo DiCaprio and Daniel Day-Lewis agreed to take pay cuts in order to reduce this film's total budget.
