This film is based on the book of the same name by James Bradley and Ron Powers.
Shortly after this book was published in 2000 director Clint Eastwood tried to option the book to convert it to film but was beat to the punch by Steven Spielberg. Spielberg hired long time collaborator William Broyles Jr. to write a draft of the movie, however Spielberg did not like the draft and the movie was shelved. Then in 2004 Eastwood and Spielberg began talking at a party in which Spielberg agreed to let Eastwood adapt the film and he would stay on as a producer.
This movie was filmed back to back with Letters From Iwo Jima.
Filming on the island of Iwo Jima was denied by the Japanese so instead the shots of the famous island had to be shot in Iceland where there is matching black volcanic sand, a distinctive feature of Iwo Jima.
Jared Leto turned down a role in this movie because he wanted to focus on his band 30 Seconds To Mars.
