DESCRIPTION:
Having abandoned his faith
in God, Father Merrin (Stellan Skarsgard) joins a British archaeological
excavation in Kenya, where an inexplicably pristine Christian Byzantine
church has been unearthed - looking as if it had been buried on the day
it was completed. But beneath the church, something much older sleeps,
waiting to be awoken. As madness swiftly decends upon the villagers and
British soldiers, Merrin watches helplessly as atrocities are committed
against in an innocent village - atrocities he had seen before and prayed
never to see again. The blood of innocents flows freely on the East African
plain, and the horror has only just begun. In the place where Evil was
born, Merrin will finally see its true face.

The original director of this film was John Frankenheimer,
but he had to step down due to the fact that he was dying. He was replaced
with a new director, Paul Schrader, who made the entire movie into a psychological
thriller that execs said was "footage without any of the bloody violence
the backers had wanted." So Schrader was fired after he had completed the
film and replaced with the current director, Renny Harlin, who re-shot
at least 90% of the movie with a rewritten script that was so bloody that
the movie initially received a NC-17 rating. A few edit points later you
are left with the final R rated version, however execs at Morgan Creek
productions later released Schrader's version as Dominion: Prequel To
The Exorcist a year later after a cold reception to this version.

Originally Liam Neeson was supposed to play Father Merrin
but he left the project for unknown reasons.
-
Scenes and sound bytes from the original The Exorcist
film were used featuring Linda Blair, however permission from Blair was
never secured.
