Evan Almighty is a
comedy for all ages that "you don't want to miss" (Kim Griffis, NBC-TV)!
Everyone's favorite funnyman Steve Carell is at his hilarious best as junior
congressman Evan Baxter, whose wish to "change the world" is heard by none
other than God (Academy Award winner Morgan Freeman). When God appears
with the perplexing request to build an ark, Evan is sure he is losing
it. But soon mysterious deliveries of wood and tools are being dropped
on his doorstep, animals of eerie shape and size are flocking to him two
by two, and his self-absorbed life goes from overnight success to almighty
mess! It's a great time for everyone!

Originally this was a script entitled The Passion Of The
Ark, which was bought by Sony. Tom Shadyac approached Sony when he
heard they had acquired the rights and suggested that they re-work the
script as a direct sequel to Bruce Almighty. Jim Carrey expressed
interest in the role and Steve Oedekerk was brought on to re-work the script
and tailor it to Jim Carrey. However after completion of the script in
2005 Carrey told producers he would not be coming back. The role was then
offered to Steve Carell who had become a mainstream star since the first
film thanks in large part to the success of The 40-Year-Old Virgin.
-
At the time the film was released this was the most expensive
film in history with a budget of over $175 million dollars. The only grossed
just over $100 million domestically.
-
There were over 100 different live animal species in the
film. The animals helping with the construction were actual animals and
not CGI as it was rumored. The only time CGI was used was to enhance the
number of animals appearing on screen at one time, or for safety reasons
(i.e. making sure that the animals didn't eat each other.).
-
The neighborhood that Evan moves his family too was a fake
neighborhood built on an empty street that was constructed for future development.
All of the houses were facades and the lawns were made of plastic. Then
CGI was used to make the neighborhood appear larger for wide shots. A similar
technique was used for the ark. Only one side was completed and the ark
was roof-less, the rest was added digitally.
