TRIVIA TO IMPRESS YOUR EASILY IMPRESSED FRIENDS

• This film was written by Harrison Ford's wife Melissa Mathison, who dictated the story from Steven Spielberg on the set of Raiders Of The Lost Ark.
• Harrison Ford had a small role in this film originally, he played Elliot's principal. However, his scene was cut, as Spielberg felt seeing the big star in the film would be too "distracting".
• An old woman named Pat Welsh who smoked two packs of cigarettes a day her entire life, was hired as the voice of E.T., she was paid a total of $380 for her voice work.
• This film is often credited as the birth place of product placement in film and television. This is because originally Spielberg had wanted to use M&Ms however the Mars company refused to licensee the product for the film. The new candy Reese's Pieces however agreed to allow their candy to appear in the film, and upon it's release, sales of the candy went through the roof.
• The E.T. puppets were primarily worked by 2 foot 10 inch stuntman who wore the costume. However the kitchen scene required the use of a ten-year-old boy who was born without legs, who was also an expert at walking on his hands, had to dawn the suit.
• For the 20th Anniversary re-issue of the film, Steven Spielberg spent $100,000 of his own money to have the guns featured in the original version of the film digitally removed. Spielberg said he regretted the choice of putting the guns in the original version, and said if he had the chance to do a re-issue he would correct the mistake, and he did.
