WHAT THE STUDIO WANTS YOU TO KNOW
DESCRIPTION:
Steven Spielberg directs this
high-velocity thriller about a motorist terrorized by an evil truck. Spielberg's
first full-length movie, Duel helped jumpstart the director's big-screen
career, with a gripping, action packed story hailed by critics as a film
that "belongs on the classics shelf reserved for the top suspensers" (Daily
Variety). Dennis Weaver stars as the traveling salesman waging a desperate
battle for survival after he is mysteriously singled out. Praised for it's
deft use of relentlessy mounting psychological tension, Duel features
one of the most uniquely terrifying "characters" in movie history: a massive,
roaring, 40 ton truck with sheer menace. A few years later, the action
of Spielberg's blockbuster Jaws would echo Duel's tale of
a lone hero in a heart-stopping fight to the finish against a monstrous
inhuman foe.

This movie marks Steven Spielberg's first time directing
a film. This movie was actually released as a TV movie on ABC and was 74
minutes long, a feature length version extended to 90 minutes was made
for a European theatrical release shortly after.
-
Screenwriter Richard Matheson said he came up the idea for
this story the same day that JFK was shot. He said that on the day he was
repeatedly tailgated by someone, and that incident inspired him to write
a short story which was published in Playboy. He then turned the story
into a full script.
-
Footage of this film was recycled and used in a few episodes
of TV's The Incredible Hulk. Spielberg was upset that his movie
was turned into stock footage and on all of his future projects he had
a clause in his contract stating they could not use his films as stock
footage.
-
This entire film was shot in 13 days.
