-
This film is based on the children's story of the same name
by Dr. Suess, which was previously adapted in 1966 as a made-for-TV animated
Christmas special. However Theodore Geisel (Dr. Suess's real name) turned
down multiple requests over the years to make a live-action version of
the story. After his death his wife who owned the rights authorized a stage
production of the book, and after seeing that agreed to sign off on doing
the movie.
-
Anthony Hopkins recorded his narration of the film in just
one day.
-
The town of Whoville was built on Universal Studios back
lot and was more than 30,000 square feet in total.
-
Jim Carrey's makeup took more than three hours to apply each
day, and was so uncomfortable that he had to be coached by Navy Seals on
how to train your mind to resist torture just to be able to concentrate
enough to do his lines.
-
This was the largest makeup project mounted since The
Wizard Of Oz which came out in 1939.
-
During the scene where The Grinch is "directing" his dog,
he is doing an impression of Ron Howard, the director of this film.
