TRIVIA TO IMPRESS YOUR EASILY IMPRESSED FRIENDS

• This movie is based off the book of the same name by Tom Eyen which was first adapted into a stage production in the early 1980's.
• After the success of the stage play many tried to get this into film form. Whitney Houston had signed up to play Deena Jones, however she kept making demands for script changes and the project was scrapped. In the mid-nineties another attempt was made by Joel Schumacher who cast Lauren Hill as Deena, however after numerous failed musicals studios were not willing to green-light the project. It wasn't until after the success of Chicago that anyone became interested in reviving the project, as it happens the studio's first choice was Bill Condon, the man behind Chicago.
• Before going to Keith Robinson, the role of C.C. White was offered to Usher, who turned the role down to scheduling conflicts.
• Jennifer Hudson had to audition against 782 other hopefuls for the part of Effie, including American Idol winner Fantasia Barrino.
• This movie is said to be based on the story of The Supremes and the Motown record label, many things in the story including the mimicking of album covers back up this claim, however after a controversy involving Motown shortly after this film was released, makers of the film were quick to say the film was complete fiction.
