This film had a meager budget of less than $5 million dollars
and was shot in a mere 28 days, which also the time span of the movie.

Originally Jason Schwartzman was cast as Donnie Darko, but
he had to drop off the project due to prior commitments and the part was
awarded to Jake Gyllenhaal.

The remake of the Tears For Fears song Mad World by
Gary Jules became very popular after appearing on this movie's soundtrack,
however it nearly didn't make the cut. Originally director Richard Kelly
wanted to use the song MLK by U2, but he was unable to get permission
for use of the the song, so instead he went with Gary Jules.

After Jake Gyllenhaal had been cast as Donnie Darko writer/director
Richard Kelly was trying to cast the part of Donnie's sister when it was
suggested that Jake's little known real-life sister Maggie Gyllenhaal play
the role. At first Kelly was hesitant to cast her in the role, but then
he was asked to watch her in a scene in Cecil B. Demented where
the actress drinks her own urine. He was impressed with the scene and decided
to cast her.
