WHAT THE STUDIO WANTS YOU TO KNOW
DESCRIPTION:
One of the most talked about
movies of year is also one of the funniest! In this hilarious comic fantasy
from writer/director Kevin Smith (Clerks, Chasing Amy) two
banished angels (Ben Affleck and Matt Damon) find a loophole that would
get them back to Heaven. The only snag? They'll be destroying existence
in the process. In an effort to stop them, the overworked Voice of God
(Alan Rickman) taps cynical mortal Bethany (Linda Fiorentino) to save the
world by preventing the angels from reaching their unholy destination:
New Jersey! Throw in two unlikely prophets named Jay and Silent Bob (Jason
Mewes and Kevin Smith), the quick-witted yet little-known thirteenth apostle
(Chris Rock) and a sexy, former muse with a case of writer's block (Salma
Hayek) and you've got an hysterical and thrilling race against time packed
with an all-star cast that Entertainment Weekly called "one of the
ten best movies of 1999!"

Kevin Smith said that this was actually his first screenplay,
written even before Clerks, however he put this film on the back
burner because he didn't want to make the film without high budget special
effects. He had planned to make this his second film, hence the line at
the end of the credits in Clerks: "Jay and Silent Bob will return
in Dogma." However Smith was unsatisfied with the script and ended
up delaying shooting of the film. It ended up taking more than 8 drafts
and 5 more years before he had a draft that he felt was worthy of being
made.

This film was heavily protested by many Catholic groups,
many of whom picketed theaters who were screening the film. Kevin Smith
himself infiltrated one of the pickets and made his ow sign condemning
the film. A local camera crew covering the protest recognized Smith and
asked to interview him. During the interview Smith claimed that his name
was Bryan Johnson, a friend of Smith's who came to the rally with him.
He said that he was often mistaken for the director and that he was a fan
of Smith's previous films.
-
On the DVD commentary of this film, director Kevin Smith
stated that he found it very difficult to work with actress Linda Fiorentino,
and there were several days on set where the actress was so angry at Smith
that she refused to speak to him.

This was the first Kevin Smith film not to be released by
Miramax. It was originally supposed to be, however while the movie was
being filmed Disney, which owned Miramax, received a lot of angry letters
and bad press from the Catholic League and decided not to release the film.
Harvey Weinstein, co-chairman of Miramax at the time and who first discovered
Kevin Smith's film Clerks, personally sent the script over to Lionsgate
Films and helped Smith to get that company to agree to distribute the movie.
