• This movie is based on a 2005 short film also directed by Neill Blompkamp called Alive In Joburg.
• Sharlto Copley is not a professional actor, he was spotted by Neill Blomkamp and cast in his short film Alive In Joburg only to get called back to his surprise to star in this big budget expansion as the lead actor.
• Neill Blompkamp says he based much of this movie on the many experiences and events he witnessed while growing up in South Africa during apartheid.
