    Rookie cop Billy Costigan (Leonardo DiCaprio) grew up in crime, that makes him the perfect mole, the man on the inside of the mob run by boss Frank Costello (Jack Nicholson). It's his job to win Costello's trust and help his detective handlers (Mark Wahlberg and Martin Sheen) bring Costello down. Meanwhile, SIU officer Colin Sullivan (Matt Damon) has everyone's trust. No one suspects he's Cosello's mole.
    How these covert lives cross, double-cross and collide is at the ferocious core of the widely acclaimed The Departed. Martin Scorsese directs, guiding a cast for the ages in a visceral tale of crime and cosequences. This is searing, can't-look-away filmmaking: like staring into the eyes of a con - or a cop - with a gun.

TRIVIA TO IMPRESS YOUR EASILY IMPRESSED FRIENDS

• This movie is based on the previous film Wu Jian Dao by Alan Mak and Felix Chong.
• This is Martin Scorsese's highest grossing film to date.
• Although set in Boston the majority of this movie was shot in New York City due to the tax credits the movie received from the state of New York.
• Much of Jack Nicholson's lines were improvised. While his scenes were loosely scripted Scorsese wanted to give Nicholson free reign to improvise in order to make the character seem more ruthless.
• The role of Dignam was reportedly offered to both Ray Liotta and Denis Leary who both had to turn down the role due to scheduling conflicts.
• Jack Nicholson had initially turned down his role in this movie, until he had a meeting with Martin Scorsese and Leonardo DiCaprio who convinced him to take the role. Nicholson said the main thing that changed his mind was that after a string of comedies he wanted to play a villain again.
• Mel Gibson had to turn down the role of Ellerby due to his commitments to Apocalypto, the role then went to Alec Baldwin who Scorsese had wanted to work with again after appearing in The Aviator.
