This movie became the first carbon-neutral movie thanks in
part to writer/director paying $200,000 out of his own pocket to counter
the carbon emitted by making this movie.

Roland Emmerich tried to get help from NASA in the making
of this film, but was told by them the the idea for the film so wildly
unbelievable that they didn't want to be associated with the film. When
the film was released NASA employees were told not to comment on the events
in the movie. After the release Roland Emmerich conceded that the majority
of events and the speed in which they take place could not actually happen
but was done mostly for entertainment value.

Originally in Emmerich's script the kids trapped in New York
are about 11-years-old, however he decided that in order to make the movie
more dramatic he should have the kids be older. After making this decision
he immediately asked Jake Gyllenhaal to play the role of Sam, as he had
wanted to work with Gyllenhaal since seeing him in the film October
Sky.
