    The follow-up to Batman Begins, The Dark Knight reunites director Christopher Nolan and star Christian Bale, who reprises the role of Batman/Bruce Wayne in his continuing war on crime. With the help of Lt. Jim Gordon and District Attorney Harvey Dent, Batman sets out to destroy organized crime in Gotham for good. The triumvirate proves effective. But soon the three find themselves prey to a rising criminal mastermind known as The Joker, who thrusts Gotham into anarchy and forces Batman closer to crossing the fine line between hero and vigilante. Heath Ledger stars as archvillain The Joker, and Aaron Eckhart plays Dent. Maggie Gyllenhaal joins the cast as Rachel Dawes. Returning from Batman Begins are Gary Oldman as Gordon, Michael Caine as Alfred and Morgan Freeman as Lucius Fox.

• The inspiration for the storyline seen in this movie comes from a variety of places, but mainly from from the Batman comics The Long Halloween, The Killing Joke and The Man Who Laughs. In addition one of the original creators of The Joker character, Jerry Robinson was hired on as a consultant to help develop Ledger's character, he insisted they use the first two comics featuring The Joker if they wanted to get the character right.
• This movie earned more than $530 million dollars in the USA, and close to $1 billion world-wide, second only to Titanic. As of the time of it's release this film holds the record for the highest grossing opening weekend of all-time and tied the record for the fastest movie to reach the $100 million dollar mark, reaching it in just 2 days. It then set records for fast grossing movie again when it reached $300 million in 5 days, and $400 million in 10 days. In addition it is also the highest grossing IMAX movie of all time, as well as being the highest selling Blu-Ray movie of all time.
• This movie marks the first time that IMAX cameras were used to film a feature movie. Christopher Nolan is a huge fan of the technology and has wanted to film  with them for a long time. The equipment is so cumbersome though that it is not practical to use the cameras for all of the shots. So instead six high action scenes were filmed in the IMAX format.
• Heath Ledger went into seclusion in a private hotel room for six weeks to create the character of The Joker. Before his death he had said he based the character on a combination of Sid Vicious and the character of Alex De Large in A Clockwork Orange.
• As a joke a Batman suit with nipples like the one used in Batman And Robin was given to Christian Bale. They told him it was the real suit, but Bale did not fall for the joke. He did however pose in the nipple suit for a few publicity shots.
• Christopher and Jonathan Nolan, the writers of the script, made a conscious decision not tell the backstory of The Joker so as to keep the character more ambiguous.
