TRIVIA TO IMPRESS YOUR EASILY IMPRESSED FRIENDS

• This movie is based on the book of the same name by Michael Blake, he adapted the book to film himself. He wrote the original book as a wedding present for Viggo Mortensen and Exene Cervenka after staying with the couple.
• The buffalo herd seen in this film was real, it was comprised of over 2000 live buffalo, and it was the largest herd in the world at the time. Only one take per day of them running could be done per day as the buffalo would run upwards of 10 miles each time they started going and it would take the entire day to round them all up again.
• This movie was filmed during a drought and the pond next to the fort was completely dry, so water was trucked in and repeatedly filled up the pond for filming.
• Kevin Costner had trouble finding financing for this film as studios were not convinced that a western would do well at the box-office. So Costner fronted a large part of $18 million dollar budget himself. The film went on to gross well over $100 million and he earned personal returns of the movie in excess of $40 million.
• The buffalo liver shared between Wind In His Hair and Dances With Wolves is made of cranberry Jell-O.
