    The Cooler is Bernie Lootz (William H. Macy), the unluckiest man in Vegas. His bad luck is so contagious that Shelly Kaplow (Alec Baldwin), the last of the old-time mobsters, uses Bernie to kill the high rollers' action at his casino. But when Bernie meets Natalie (Maria Bello) and falls in love, he gives a whole new meaning to being "unlucky in love."

• While this movie takes place in Las Vegas, the majority of the movie was filmed in Reno. The casino in this movie is actually The Golden Phoenix, which was being remolded at the time this film was being shot.
• William H. Macy only wore three suits in this movie. When he has really bad luck, he wears a suit two sizes to big, when his luck starts to change his suit is one size too big, and when he is in love his suit fits and is exactly the right size. His ties also change from dark to bright, as well as the lighting around him. The director said this was all in an effort to emphasize the character's mood.
• William H. Macy who plays the cooler in this movie said that when he went to see this movie at European film festivals people kept talking about the story and the characters, and when he saw the film at American film festivals people kept talking about Maria Bello's nudity.
