This film is based on the book of the same name by George
Crile, which was itself based on actual events.

In the film Charlie Wilson receives a stinger missile as
a token of gratitude from the Afghan people he supplied weapons too. The
real Charlie Wilson keeps the stinger missile on display in his home and
says it is one of his most prized possessions.

The real Charlie Wilson has said of the accuracy of his character:
"Anything I might have objected to was provable". Wilson had a heart transplant
surgery right before the release of this film, however he still managed
to make it to the premiere of the film.
