This movie was based off the book of the same name by Roald Dahl, who also wrote 4 out of the 5 songs used in this movie himself. This book was originally adapted to film in 1971 and was called Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory.
Some of the many people considered for the role of Willy Wonka in this movie include Christopher Walken, Marilyn Manson, Nicolas Cage, Brad Pitt, Robin WIlliams, Steve Martin, and Mike Meyers.
Martin Scorsese was also briefly attached to direct this movie.
The singing voice of the Oompa Loompas was Danny Elfman, long time composer of Tim Burton films.
John August was asked to write this screenplay after working with Burton on Big Fish, he would also follow up this film with another Burton movie, The Corpse Bride. August claims that when he wrote the script he had never seen the original movie Willy Wonka And The Chocolate Factory, and he said after completing his script and seeing the original he felt that the original was much darker.
