WHAT THE STUDIO WANTS YOU TO KNOW
DESCRIPTION:
Clint Eastwood directs Oscar
winner Angela Jolie and Oscar nominee John Malkovich in a riveting and
unforgettable true story.
Los Angelas, 1923. When single mother
Christine Collins (Jolie) leaves for work, her son vanishes without a trace.
Five months later, the police reunite mother and son; but he isn't her
boy. Driven by one woman's relentless quest for truth, the case exposes
a world of corruption, captivates the public and changes Los Angeles forever.
This emotionally gripping story illustrates
the profound power of a mother's love in "a mesmerizing film that burns
in the memory" (Peter Travers, Rolling Stone).

-
Ron Howard was originally set to direct this film, however
due to scheduling conflicts he had to step down and instead became the
film's executive producer. It was at Howard's request that Jolie was cast
however, as he thought she looked most like a woman from the time period.
Other actresses who auditioned for the role were Hilary Swank and Reese
Witherspoon.
-
Screenwriter J. Michael Straczynski obtained the actual police
files from the LA City Hall just before they were scheduled for destruction.
Straczynski became fascinated with the case and after reading through the
legal documents and using dialogue pulled directly from the actual court
notes, he wrote this film's first draft in just 11 days.
-
While this film is based on a true story some facts of the
case were changed. One such change is that the killer's accomplice was
not a boy, but was in fact his mother who was forced to participate in
the the murders, and she was sentenced to life in prison. Another example
is that in the film, Christine Collins was released from the mental hospital
after it was learned of the murders, however in actuality, she was released
when the boy claiming to be her son came forward and admitted he was not
her son.
-
At the end of the film we learn that the crooked police chief
was demoted from his position, however it is not mentioned that 2 years
later he got the position back and served in the post until 1939.
