Atop that list is Czech Resistance leader Victor Laszlo (Paul Henreid), whose only hope is Rick Blaine (Humphrey Bogart), a cynical American who sticks his neck out for no one... especially Victor's wife Ilsa (Ingrid Bergman). the ex-lover who broke his heart. So when Ilsa offers herself in exchange for Laszlo's safe transport out of the country, the bitter Rick must decide what's more important - his own happiness or the countless lives that hang in the balance.

• This film is based on the play Everybody Come To Rick's by Murray Burnett and Joan Alison.
• This film is ranked #2 on the AFI: Top 100 Movies Of All Time list.
• This film is ranked #5 as of 09/10/2006 on imdb.com top 250 movies of all time.
• Originally the role of Ilsa was to be given to Michele Morgan but she wanted $55,000 for the role. Producers of the film refused to pay it as Ingrid Bergman agreed to do the film for $25,000.
• The role of Sam was nearly made into a female character by producer Hal B. Wallis, he had wanted the role to be played by Ella Fitzgerald.
• MGM had the opportunity to buy the rights to this film for $5000, but the head of MGM refused to pay that much. The script was then sniffed out by Warner Brothers who liked the script so much they offered $20,000 to buy it.
• Dooley Wilson, the actor who played Sam couldn't play the piano, he was actually a drummer and he had to fake it by watching a real piano player play the songs he was faking at the same time so he could mimic the hand movements.
• While this movie has numerous famous qoutes, the line "Play it again Sam" never actually appears in the movie. That line was in The Marx brothers movie A Night In Casablanca.
• After the film's success the studio worked trying to make a sequel to the film which was to be called Brazzaville, but due to many obstacles, the biggest not being able to secure Ingrid Bergman, the film never came to pass.
