CARD SHARK'S REVIEW OF:
LEATHERHEADS (2008)

OPENING THOUGHTS

So I rented this one even though Hefe told me not to. The previews made me think there might be something worth watching here, although now that I have seen it I am having trouble remembering what that was. Don't get me wrong I like a good prohibition era movie that involves sports... Ok, maybe that was too specific, it doesn't have to involve sports. Give me Once Upon A Time in America any day of the week and I will be happy.

ACTING

GEORGE CLOONEY loves The Three Stooges. At least that's what I gleaned from the job he did in this movie. In fact I was shocked that Curly Joe didn't make an appearance. They could have easily digitally put him in there next to Clooney and it wouldn't have detracted from his performance one bit. This is quite easily the worst Clooney can get. I have heard a lot of people consider him the new Jack Nicholson in Hollywood, but that is not going to last if he makes a sequel to this atrocity.
RENEE ZELLWEGER is just awful in general, but she was also pretty bad in this movie too. Ever since The Hudsucker Proxy came out, everyone seems to want to copy the fast talking woman reporter. It worked in Proxy but sure as hell didn't work here. I just hate the hammy talk of the twenties used in this film as well. Just use a horribly fake accent and put the word "see" at the end of every sentence and suddenly it's magically the twenties. Screw you script writers. I liked Renee in Me, Myself, and Irene but her career has just seemed to downhill ever since.
JOHN KRASINSKI was okay in his role, but he just doesn't seem to have much more range than what you see in The Office week in and week out. His twenties accent was still a bit heavy handed for my taste, but the performance was at least better than that of his co-stars. I'm starting to lose faith that I will ever see him in a good role.

DIRECTION AND SCRIPT

GEORGE CLOONEY will be put on trial in the year 2020 in the well publicized film crime trials for this one. He along with Woody Allen and every other director that has tried to write themselves a self indulgent gem of a role. Okay it's possible the 2020 film crime trials won't happen, and this man will escape the justice we all want and deserve. But I will deliver my own form of justice by probably not watching any other movies directed by Clooney.

THE VERDICT

I don't think I hated this one quite as much as Hefe did, but it was still a horrible movie. I did not think it was the worst movie made in the last 10 years, but it was still filled with a lot of ham and cheese. Then again maybe I'm just hungry. Hefe warned me before I watched it that this movie was full of itself. I wasn't quite sure what he meant until I had watched it, but he was totally correct.
