To be honest I wasn't looking forward
to seeing this movie. Every trailer I had seen had me thinking this was
just going to be another Peacemaker or Syriana. It also didn't
help that when I actually started watching the film I was greeted with
a very minimalist soundtrack. In fact I don't think there was more than
three notes heard in the first 40 minutes of the film. To my surprise however,
this ended up being a spy movie of the highest caliber. I really appreciated
that there was very little exposition about what was going on. The first
half of the movie was very slow, which coincidentally what allowed me to
count the notes in the soundtrack. That being said, don't give up on this
movie too early. About half way through this flick suddenly got amazing.
After seeing the documentary This Film Is Not Yet Rated, I don't
know how this movie managed to land an "R" rating. There is one scene in
this that is just plain dirty, which would have been fine except that the
average age of the patrons in the theater was about 60. For some reason
I always feel like I need a shower after watching something lude with people
that are my parents age or older. However what made this movie great, besides
that "special" scene, was the tension between characters. These spies were
ready to kill with no warning and no grandiose speeches. The bad guy didn't
catch the good guy and then spend twenty minutes giving a lecture about
his evil plan. They just shot people dead without asking any questions.
It made the tension thick for the last half of the movie. In the end this
turned out to be an absolutely outstanding spy film.
