CARD SHARK'S REVIEW OF:
ADVENTURELAND (2009)

OPENING THOUGHTS

I barely knew that this movie existed before I rented it, in fact now that I think about it, I don't even remember seeing a trailer or anything for this film. In retrospect though I am extremely glad I knew nothing about it going in, because it was not nearly as funny as I thought it could have been. I probably would have felt disappointed if I had heard about the concept and got excited about the possibility if it being good.

ACTING

JESSE EISENBERG apparently gets work by taking all of the roles that Michael Cera turns down. That being said I watched this movie after seeing Zombieland and wasn't nearly as annoyed by his performance this time around. I thought he was the right kind of awkward for this role, but that still doesn't mean that he should keep getting lead roles.
KRISTEN STEWART has no acting ablility at all. I have been confusing her with another actress that should be taking all her work but for some reason is not, and that actress is Missy Peregrym. She has a similar look but is a way better actress. I lost some cash by making a bet that Kristen was on the TV show Reaper over the weekend and I was wrong. She sucks. She sucks the life out of every movie she is in. She is like a vampire, except not all sparkly and shit.
RYAN REYNOLDS is a funny actor who can even play it straight every once in a while. In this film he wasn't funny, in fact he wasn't even likeable, I am pretty sure he was straight though. That didn't stop me from me disappointed in him though, he has done much better work in the past and I would like to see him be a little more choosy about the movies he agrees to be in.

DIRECTION AND SCRIPT

GREG MOTTOLA wrote and directed this movie, I don't know why he did, but he did. I am sure he was telling someone about his experiences of working at a carnival, and they told him that would make for an awesome movie. However, just because you may have fond memories of your time there does not mean that it automatically makes for a good story. Nothing about the direction wowed me, and the story jumped roughly when it transitioned from working hours at the amusement park to after hours at home.

THE VERDICT

It's strange that a movie named Adventureland would have absolutely no adventure in it. The best thing I can say about this movie was that I  didn't hate this film, but I didn't love it either. In fact I didn't expect anything from this movie, which made it easier for me not to feel disappointed with it. It was just another movie that wound up in my Netflix queue and somehow made it to my door.
