According to the Coens, all of the main characters in the film were written for the actors who played them, with the exception of Tilda Swinton's part.
The Coen brothers said that they wrote the script for this movie as well as No Country For Old Men. They said they would switch off writing this movie one day, and No Country For Old Men the next.
The fake movie seen in this movie called Coming Up Daisy, according to the movie poster seen in the movie, is based on a book by Cormac McCarthy, which is the man who wrote the book No Country For Old Men was based on, and was directed by Sam Raimi, who is a long-time friend of the Coen Brothers.
