• This movie is based off of a short story that appeared originally in the October 13th, 1997 issue of The New Yorker, and then later in author E. Annie Proulx's collection of short stories: Close Range.
• Diana Ossana and co-writer Larry McMurtry claim they had this script finished since 1997.
• Before Ang Lee was signed on as director, Joel Schumacher and Gus Van Sant had considered taking on the project.
• According to producers this film cost so little money to make that it's production cost was covered in it's opening weekend, even though it had a limited release in only 5 cities.
• Heath Ledger reportedly did not originally want to take the role he was offered in this film, but was convinced by then girlfriend Naomi Watts. He ended up married to his co-star from this film Michelle Williams.
