Sacha Baron Cohen, the star

The character of Borat made his first appearance on Sacha
Baron Cohen's HBO series Da Ali G Show. Baron Cohen said that he
based the character of Borat on a Russian doctor who he described as unintentionally
hilarious.

Most of the so-called Kazakh language Borat speaks in the
film is actually Hebrew.

Sacha Baron Cohen's portrayal of Kazakhstan drew a lot of
anger from the government of Kazakhstan. The government went as far as
taking out a four page ad in The New York time refuting many of Borat's
claims about the country.

Sacha Baron Cohen has had numerous problems surrounding the
making of this film. While filming the police was called on him 91 times,
in addition several law suits were filed against him for defamation of
character. A lawsuit was also filed in Germany against the film by The
European Center for Antiziganism Research which alleged that this film
beget negative attitudes towards Roma and Sinti people.

Todd Phillips was originally set to direct and collaborated
on the story, however due to creative differences with Sacha Baron Cohen
Phillips left the project and the director's seat was given to Larry Charles.
