WHAT THE STUDIO WANTS YOU TO KNOW
DESCRIPTION:
One of America's greatest
performers, Bobby Darin lived a rags-to-riches life. He worked his way
from shady nightclubs to his dream destination, The Copacabana, where he
wowed crowds with Splish Splash, Mack The Knife and other
hits. He was a marvel at singing, songwriting and performing - stealing
the hearts of fans everywhere despite the suffering in his own heart.

-
The original script for this film was completed in 1987 by
Lewis Colick and was originally going to be produced by Paramount. Numerous
rewrites were done by James Toback, Tom Epperson, and Lorenzo Cacaterra.
By the time the final script was done the Writers Guild decided to credit
Kevin Spacey with the final draft and Lewis Colick for the original, many
of the other writers asked not to be credited.
-
Before Kevin Spacey decided to direct this movie numerous
directors were also slated to direct this film including Barry Levinson.
-
The role of Bobby Darin was not offered to Kevin Spacey because
producers thought he would be to old to play the role of a man who only
lived to be 35. In 2000 the completed script was offered to Leonardo DiCaprio
who turned down the role. Throughout the failed attempts in years before
the role had been offered to Tom Cruise, Bruce Willis, and Johnny Depp
all of whom declined.
-
Aside from writing, directing, starring, and producing this
movie, Kevin Spacey also does all of his own singing.
-
This marks the first film for William Ullrich who plays the
young Bobby Darin in this movie.
