TRIVIA TO IMPRESS YOUR EASILY IMPRESSED FRIENDS

• Was the only animated film in history to ever be nominated for the Best Picture category at the Academy Awards. It will remain that way since the Academy has now created a Best Animated Film category. In addition it is also the only animated film to win the Best Picture (Musical/Comedy) award at The Golden Globes.
• This was Howard Ashman's last film, in fact by the time he was nominated and even won his Academy Award he had already died. This film was dedicated to his memory.
• The role of Chip was original a very small character with one line, however once the writers heard the voice of Bradley Pierce, who voiced Chip, they expanded his role. His role became so big they had to cut the Music Box, which was another small character that lived in the castle.
• The song Human Again was cut in the early stages of development, but was then later added to the Disney On Ice show. The song was then animated and added to the Special Edition DVD.
• In the French version of the film, the character Cogsworth's name was changed to Big Ben.
• Although never mentioned anywhere in the film, according to the Official Disney Encyclopedia, the Beast's name is Adam.
• This film marks the first time a finished script was done prior to animating. Originally at Disney they would have a story outline and then animated and change the script as they went, it was discovered that by having a finished script first they could save money by only animating scenes that would appear in the movie.
• The famous dance scene in this film was actually the dance scene from Sleeping Beauty with Belle and Beast essentially drawn over the the Sleeping Beauty characters. This was done as the animators were on a time crunch.
• This marks the 3rd attempt to adapt Beauty And The Beast into an animated feature. Walt Disney himself tried in the 1930's and the 1950's to adapt the story but could not work out a successful treatment.
• Julie Andrews was considered for the role of Mrs. Potts but the role eventually went to Angela Lansbury. Lansbury originally didn't want to sing her famous son Be Our Guest. Producers convinced her to sing it one time and promised they would only use it if they couldn't find anyone else. That recording ended up in the final cut of the film.
• There is only 5 minutes in the film in which there is not a musical score playing. In addition there is a whopping 25 minutes of actual songs in the film.
• Originally Disney execs wanted Jodi Benson, who voiced Ariel in The Little Mermaid to voice Belle, however Howard Ashman insisted they need someone who sounded more European. They ended up casting Paige O'Hara at his request.
• There were two story boarded scenes that never made it into the film. A scene in which Beast is seen devouring a carcass he killed, and another in which Gaston visits the insane asylum. Both scenes were dropped for fear of them being too gruesome and scary.
• This is the first Disney film to incorporate CGI effects into an animated movie. It also is the 2nd Disney film to be animated entirely using the CAPS computer system that was developed in The Little Mermaid.
