Before Christian Bale landed the role of Batman he had a
final audition in alongside other actors who also made the finals which
included: Joshua Jackson, Eion Bailey, Hugh Dancy, Billy Crudup, Cillian
Murphy, Henry Cavill and Jake Gyllenhaal. Wile Bale ended up getting the
part, director Christpoher Nolan was so impressed with Cillian Murphy that
he offered him the role of Scarecrow instead.

When Chrisitan Bale won the part of Batman, he only weighed
120 pounds due to losing as much weight as possible for the film The
Machinist. Director Nolan told him to gain as much weight as he could,
so he went on a special diet and weight training to bulk up. By the time
filming had started Bale had gained 100 pounds coming in around 220 pounds.
The crew began nicknaming him "Fatman" because he had gotten so large.
Bale then dropped 20 pounds to give himself a more muscular firm look.

This movie was initially set to be made as a realization
of Frank Miller's graphic novel Batman: Year One, with director
Darren Aronofsky. But that project fell through partly because of a poorly
written screenplay and partly because the story was so much different than
traditional Batman stories that studios feared audiences would reject
it. However several ideas from the graphic novel can be spotted in this
film including the Bat Sonar device that calls bats to come help Batman.
-
While special effects were unavoidable in this film, director
Christopher Nolan wanted everything to be as authentic as possible. So
he constructed enormous sets like the bat cave which was built in a large
hanger. An entire city block of Gotham City was also built for the movie.
Nolan also demanded that the Batmobile be a working fast car, as a result
the car was able to go from 0 to 60 mph in 6 seconds, and could turn corners
at 60 mph without flipping over.

In 1995 Christian Bale auditioned for the role of Robin in
Batman
Forever, but lost the role to Chris O'Donnell.
